Councillor Kerryn Phelps pushes for promised LGBTQI artwork to be delivered.
This evening, Councillor Phelps is moving a motion at Council regarding a permanent artwork designed to honour the LGBTQI community on Oxford St. The painting was promised by the Lord Mayor back in 2014; however, to date, there has been no development or movement towards the fulfilment of this promise.
Councillor Phelps hopes to change that this evening and inject some momentum into the project. The minutes from the original motion back in February 2014 state that the artwork should be in place before the 40th anniversary of Mardi Gras. In 2017, the Council moved to put aside $80 000 to facilitate consultation and creation of a (temporary) artwork in Taylor Square. However, there is still no sign of either painting, and Mardi Gras is almost upon us.
Councillor Kerryn Phelps will call on the CEO to undertake the severely delayed work to deliver the promised art.
