Women Media Arts and Film Festival is returning for this 3rd year
Since its conception in 2013, the festival has become a credible platform for women film producers, writers and directors locally and globally.
The festival received nearly 500 submissions for short and feature films as well as digital media arts. The selections include 11 feature films, 42 short films, and 4 digital media work installations. The submissions come from 29 countries covering the 7 continents.
Festival Co-Curator Maryam Kassaie said, “This year, the festival received an overwhelming number of submissions.”
The feature film category consists of multi-award winning works by women in key positions and includes BAFTA-nominated ’16 Years till Summer’ by Lou McLoughlan, ‘Public Intimacy’ by Luciana Canton, and ‘The Great Maiden’s Blush’ by Andrea Bosshard.
Vahid Vahed, Festival Co-Curator, said, “It’s such an honour to represent these films by women and extremely intriguing to become familiar with alternative points of view in oppose to the dominant men’s perspective of the world.”
Australian women filmmakers included in the short film category included are ‘Gaest’ by Alex Mullarky, ‘Black Cat’ by Leonie Savvides, and ‘Daughter’ by Sara Jane Portelli. The international short film category includes films from Lebanon, Spain, Russia, Switzerland, and Canada.
Installations presented in the Media Arts Category include ‘Continent’ by Katya Yakubov, ‘In Motion’ from Anabela Costa, ‘Lullaby’ by Sarah Ouazzani, and ‘Rainy Red’ by Evguenia Men from Australia.
Ms Kassaie said, “The films by women provides a unique way of addressing issues surrounding women, politically, socially and economically through the medium of moving images with outstanding cinematic forms.”
