Following the news earlier this week that the Federal Government had rejected the proposed plebiscite on marriage equality, the NSW Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby (GLRL) have called on Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to allow a vote in Parliament.

In a statement, NSW GLRL co-convenor Chris Pycroft said, “Parliament remains the most appropriate place for the issue of marriage equality to be resolved. We now ask that this happen as soon as possible.”

Mr Pycroft also highlighted that there is still a long journey ahead and “much work still to do”. He said, “We will now resume discussions with MPs from all parties, especially those in the Liberal Party who’ve been particularly supportive in recent times.”

Current indications show that marriage equality legislation would likely pass both houses of Parliament if a vote were to take place.

MPs of all persuasions support “Marriage equality. We urge Mr Turnbull to allow his Coalition colleagues to vote on legislation so we can get this done once and for all.”

There is also broad support for equality throughout the community, with estimates showing between 65 and 70 per cent of Australians favour a law change.

Co-convenor Lauren Foy said, “LGBTI groups across the country have united, and with them, we are confident that equality is on the horizon.”
