A group of activists will march to the PM’s Sydney office this Saturday to demand action on marriage equality.
Activists will hold a rally this Saturday, 6 April, to demand Prime Minister Turnbull take action on marriage equality.
The rally will begin at 12pm at Taylor Square and will end with protestors, along with a group of influential leaders, marching on Turnbull’s electoral office in Edgecliff.
The event is being organised by Australians for Equality, who believe a plebiscite will hurt LGBTQI Australians and their families.
“People’s lives and love should not be decided by popular vote,” event co-organiser Jim Argent wrote on Facebook. "The plebiscite would also see some people use highly inflammatory and false statements against the LGBTIQ community.”
The protest organisers have labelled Turnbull’s decision to uphold former Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s plebiscite on same-sex marriage "not good enough."
“The vast majority of Australians support marriage equality, and it will cost Australia over $500 million to have a divisive plebiscite which is not necessary,” the organisers wrote on the rally’s event page, which has attracted over 500 attendees so far.
“John Howard did not have a plebiscite to change the Marriage Act, and there is no reason why we need one to reverse it now.”
The event will be MC'ed by Getup!’s Sally Rugg and a number of high-profile speakers will present their views. They include Enoch Mailangi, Cat Rose from Community Action Against Homophobia, Chris Pycroft from Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby, Ben Gilmour from Paddington Uniting Church, and Geoff Thomas from Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.
Outspoken advocate for marriage equality and Deputy Opposition Leader Tanya Plibersek, Newtown MP Jenny Leong and Greens candidate for Wentworth Dejay Toborek will also be addressing the crowd.
Prime Minister Turnbull was also invited to speak at the event, but his staff told organisers that he would not be in Sydney on Saturday.
