Still from Anti Marriage Equality Ad
Still from Anti-Marriage Equality Ad

Stooping to a new low, Australian Marriage uses children as emotional weapons.

As most of us were out celebrating another wonderful Mardi Gras this weekend, Channel 7 and Channel 9 were giving prime air time to a campaign that is disturbingly offensive to the LGBTIQ community and their supporters.

Essentially the message here was that children need a voice in the Marriage Equality debate.
Children would “miss out on a mother and a father” if Marriage Equality was given the green light and thus would lead to the oppression of children with same-sex parents.

Same-Sex couples have been having children and adopting for quite some time now, if they were allowed to marry that would change nothing in respect to having children. The ad is so backwards, if it wasn’t so offensive it would be laughable.

Does David van Gend think we are waiting for sex after marriage? That once the marriage ban is lifted we will finally be able to have sex and magically reproduce?

SBS refused to air this ad, especially not to give it competing air time with the actual parade event. An SBS spokesperson had told Fairfax Media that it reserved the right “to determine what advertisements it broadcasts.”

Rodney Croome, the national director of Australian Marriage Equality, said the ad was “actually harming the many Australian children being raised by same-sex couples because it defends discrimination against their families.”

On the AustralianMarriage.org website, there are slogans like “C’mon Aussies” and “Think of the Child” trying to sway the perspective to a new low. The fact that this is even allowed to run across T.V as “freedom of speech” is incomprehensible.

There is a petition running to have the advert removed, you can go to change.org where over 6,500 people have signed to show their support.
