Support the LGBT community whilst eating delicious food!

Infamous Newtown dive bar, Mary’s Newtown and its CBD sister are jumping on the rainbow float to celebrate Sydney’s Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras whilst supporting local community charities. The Mary’s burger (word on the street is it’s the best burger in town) is getting a glittery makeover – Meet the Fairy’s Burger.

Nestled in the soft creases of the Fairy’s Burger is a delicious blob of hundreds and thousands, a spirited nod to the many colours of the Mardi Gras rainbow. The owners, Jake Smyth and Kenny Graham, are asking customers to spend an extra dollar for the Fairy Burger option with all the proceeds donated to Camp Out and Twenty 10. Mary’s will then match every dollar collected via the sale of the Fairy’s Burger.

The charities are local organisations supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer and sex and gender diverse teens, and Mary’s has always supported those local groups.

“We have always believed that the role of the business within communities is to enhance and enrich,” Kenny Graham mentions.

“Our guests make Mary’s such a crazy, colourful, vibrant and nourishing experience. Mary’s isn’t gay or straight, man or woman, fat or thin, rich or poor. Mary’s is everyone and everything,” says Jake Smyth. “The Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is one of the great celebrations of collective diversity, and we wanted to find a way to show our solidarity, both financially and physically.”

The “physical part” (don’t let your minds wander now) comes from rainbow artworks adorning the entrances of Newtown and CBD by artistic collaborator Sindy Sinn.

The Fairy’s burger is available now from the CBD store (154 Castlereagh Street, Sydney) and Newtown (6 Mary Street, Newtown) until Sunday, 8 March.
