21 LNP MPs crossed the floor in support.
Queensland has reinstated state-sanctioned civil partnership ceremonies for same-sex couples.
Last week, the Opposition agreed to allow a free vote on the laws. Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg, who opposes the bill, told Parliament he believes it is important for his members of his party to be able to vote according to their own will.
He said, “The LNP makes a commitment today that our members should be able to have a free vote on this issue. We understand that this is a deeply personal issue for many people. There is a diversity of views and therefore I absolutely respect that and I think that it is highly appropriate that we allow our members a free vote.”
The bill passed 64 to 22 with almost half the LNP party room crossing the floor in support.
Former attorney-general of the Newman government Jarrod Bleijie, who is responsible for removing civil partnership ceremonies, was one of many that crossed the floor.
One supporter in the public gallery was heard saying “Thank you for restoring our dignity”.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said, “Think about the opportunities and choices you want for your children and grandchildren. Think about whether you would want these opportunities and choices to be available to them should they fall in love with someone of the same sex”.
Attorney-General Yvette D’Ath introduced the amendment. She encouraged MPs to consider who the bill would affect and added that the Newman government’s actions “caused real hurt” in Queensland.
D’Ath added that she is hopeful that the ceremonies won’t be removed again if legislated saying, “Let’s hope that this time it’s here to stay. When it comes to what is the most important relationship in our lives, language and rituals are important.”
