The chants of the early gay and lesbian movement – ‘Out of the Closets Into the Streets’ ‘Out of the Bars Into the Streets’ – provide the theme for a major Pride conference to be held in Sydney on 24 and 25 September 2010.
It will mark the beginning of open lesbian and gay activism in Australia.
“The 40th anniversary of the gay and lesbian movement in Australia marks the formation of the first openly gay and lesbian groups and rights demonstrations in 1970 and 1971,” said Ken Davis and Diane Minnis, Conference Co-Convenors.
Sydney’s Pride History Group is hosting the Into the Streets, the 10th national Homosexual Histories conference, in conjunction with the University of Technology, Sydney and the Australian Lesbian and Gay Archives, with support from the City of Sydney.
Day 2 of the conference focuses on the 40th anniversary, with sessions on:
- CAMP and the early days
- Remembering early activisms in Sydney
- Coming Together around Australia
- Views of oppression and liberation
- Cultural subversions.
