Australia’s premier LGBTI hockey organisations Sydney Bentstix and Melbourne Parkville combined with the NZ Hockey Heroes team to win the pink hockey mens world championship at the 3rd world out games in Antwerp last week.

Australia’s premier LGBTI hockey organisations Sydney Bentstix Hockey and Melbourne Parkville Hockey combined with the NZ Hockey Heroes team to win the pink hockey men’s world championship at the 3rd world out games in Antwerp last week. The team Stix Down Under went through the tournament undefeated scoring a 3-1 win against the Dutch team in the Gold Medal match.

This Gold medal victory adds the Sydney Bentstix haul including the Gay Games 2010 Gold Medal, plus PInk Hockey Championship wins in Copenhagen Outgames in 2010 and Wellington Asia Pacific Outgames in 2011.

Club president, David Kyles  “Couldn’t be any prouder of the guys. Not only have they defended their World OutGames title, they have extended their unbeaten run at International Tournaments to 11 years. Quiet an extraordinary achievement”

In more local news, the Bentstix Men’s division 7 team are set to take out the minor premiership this season, with just two matches remaining before the finals commence. Captain/Coach Brodie West says “The team has been in fantastic form. Seeing the team set to score over 100 goals in a single season is a phenomenal result. We have grown a lot as a club, and I am very confident about our ability to bring home the premiership this season”The Bentstix girls have also had a very successful season, finishing minor premiers last weekend with a commanding 4-0 win to Bosco.  Their first finals match will be commencing this weekend at 8.30am on Sunday morning (18 Aug) at Kyeemagh hockey field.

Coach Peter Hills says “We have worked together as a club to grow not just as a social outlet, but as a competitive unit. I think that the results this season can be attributed to the hard work and respect our members have garnered both on and off the field. Hopefully we will be holding two premierships at the end of the year, but I think we can be proud of our achievements even if we don’t”

President David Kyles is thrilled with the 2013 season’s results, declaring that “We decided we had to step things up and challenge ourselves this season if we wanted to have success in the local competitions.

Our decision to move from 1 club coach to 3 team coaches, and the addition of a second men’s’ team has paid off. The dream of taking that next step and winning our first ever premiership is edging closer to a reality, and it would be a great reward for all the players efforts. They deserve it!”.
