Sydney lesbian soccer team the Flying Bats is on the hunt for new players.

Flying Bats FC, Australia’s top lesbian football club, is back with a vengeance in 2013 after taking out the Division 2 premiership in the Northwest Sydney Women’s Football league and two teams making the championship rounds.

FBFC will be battling it out with some of Sydney’s best in Division One, home to ex-state and national players, and will be throwing everything this year into their top team.

“It’s a huge honour to be invited into division one, and we want to do our community proud,” says Flying Bats president Alicia Rich.

The Bats, which is the largest club of its kind in the world, will be holding open tryouts for its Division One squad on February 3 to give hopefuls from all clubs and backgrounds the chance to show the Bats what they’ve got.

Rich said the side would have a dedicated, accredited coach and extra training. Commitment to the team and its goals is a must, she added.

“We always play hard at the Bats and this year we’ll be training hard too,” she said.

FBFC is a Newtown-based football club catering to all skill levels and all walks of life, welcoming those of diverse sexualities and sporting abilities. It fields six teams from beginners to elite level including an over-35s side.

Division One tryouts will be held at Tempe Reserve, Holbeach Ave Tempe from 2-4pm on Sunday February 3. Pre-season training begins on February 5, 7pm at the same place.
