With a star-studded cast, Return to Earth by Lally Katz is a heart-felt modern Australian fable about marching to the beat of your own drum.
ARTHUR and Griffin Independent present the Sydney premiere of Return to Earth, a deeply-felt story about family, sacrifice and reconnecting with the world where audiences enter the highly imaginative world of award-winning playwright Lally Katz (Smashed, Neighbourhood Watch).
When prodigal daughter Alice returns to the sleepy seaside town of Tathra, she’s so out of touch with reality and social mores that she can’t even remember how to eat. Maniacally cheerful, her parents are determined to gloss over the missing years, but her brother and former best friend are not so quick to forgive. Where has Alice been? What’s her real name? And why does she hold the key to their happiness?
This strikingly unconventional play starring Logie Award winner Shari Sebbens (The Sapphires), opens the door to a whole new universe at the SBW Stables Theatre from 4 September.
Director Paige Rattray says, “Return to Earth is surreal drama, with a swirl of perspectives. Are we looking at the dark side of suburban kitsch or a warm tale of homecoming and redemption? This is a world in which reality is deeply unstable. Think Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind meets Memento on a trip to the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, with your grandmother in tow and the TV on in the background.”
The strong cast comprises Bruce Carter (Redfern Now, The Gods of Wheat Street), Yure Covich (Fury – Sydney Theatre Company), Laurence Coy (The Removalists – Tamarama Rock Surfers), Tahlia Hoffman Hayes, Mark Langham, Shari Sebbens (A Hoax – Griffin Theatre Company, The Sapphires, Redfern Now), Wendy Strehlow (I Want to Sleep with Tom Stoppard – Tamarama Rock Surfers, Henry 4 – Bell Shakespeare, All Saints, A Country Practice), Catherine Terracini (Bug – Griffin Theatre Company, Faust – Bell Shakespeare) and Scarlett Waters.
