The Melbourne Rainbow Band is a community wind ensemble, created to provide a social venue and a common creative outlet for like-minded people that reflects the diversity of the GLBTI and wider community. Since the band’s founding in 1995, the Melbourne Rainbow Band has become a prominent group within Melbourne's GLBTI community and is a regular at many events on the GLBTI calendar.
Performing well known pieces such as Gustav Holst’s domineering planet Mars – The Bringer of War, the light hearted Teddy Bears Picnic, and the delicate and ever precarious Funeral March of a Marionette; ‘Pictures’ presents a mode of story-telling through music that goes beyond sound.
A diverse, yet inspiring repertoire chosen by Musical Director David Wisken culminates with the superbly orchestrated October by Eric Whitaker. The Melbourne Rainbow Band will paint you a picture of falling leaves, fallen classmates, Irish legends, misted valleys through imaginary lands, and a Carnival of Animals where ducks and elephants walk together in solidarity.
Pictures will be hosted by the incomparable Dean Beck, who lends both his dulcet Joy 94.9 radio tones and his visual presence to the evening. Also featured will be the stunning Rosa McCarty and soloists from within the band. The Melbourne Rainbow Band challenges you to go beyond the MP3 player, beyond the soundscapes of public transport and exercise routines, and into the mind’s eye of the composers to witness the landscapes and events that have inspired their art.
This one night only concert will be held at 7:00pm on Sunday 30th June 2013 in the James Tatoulis Auditorium – MLC Kew. Melbourne Rainbow Band President, Ben Boreham said, “the concept for this show has really had a huge impact on our preparation – not only are we able to express ourselves visually, but due to this we are becoming more expressive musically as well.”
