Coffs Harbour goes LGBT crazy with its annual surf competition and festival aimed at the queer community.
Surfing is a completely individual experience yet surfers are part of a global tribe that crosses all political, gender, sexual, cultural, religious, and economic boundaries. Coast Out has achieved this and brought together, in the spirit of competition people with a common passion and a drive to conquer the ever quintessentially perfect wave!
The beautiful city of Coffs Harbour is not only home to pristine waters and great surf breaks, it is also home to the countries first out and proud gay surf festival.
Flying the rainbow flag over the weekend of the 28th, 29th and 30th October contestants from everywhere converge for this unique event, where “It’s so gay” is in fact “Unreal”. Sponsored by local real estate agent UNReal Estate, where equality has come out of the closet! With equal prize money amongst the male and female divisions and open to everybody regardless of gender. Coast Out surf comp is truly an “Unreal” event.
Hosted by iconic Sydney Drag Queen Sandy Bottom, who knows nothing about surfing! But knows that UNReal Estate will not be attempting to sell you a toilet block as a six-bedroom house. She is very entertaining and we welcome her back this year. This year brings a Longboarding division to attract an even more variety of surfers to the festival at the UNReal surf contest.
“The contest was conducted professionally, yet competitors felt relaxed and happy with how the event was executed”, said Natalie Jandl, Contest Director.
“Everyone was friendly out in the water and enjoyed the event”, said local surfer Lee Winkler. Lee Winkler was happy to support such an event to open up any barriers. Lee is a born and bred local of Coffs Harbour and has been surfing for over 20 years with the last 10 of them as a World Professional Surfer reaching the elite World Championship Tour.
The Coast Out UNReal Surf Comp 2011 is a mobile event and will take advantage of the best waves Coffs Coast has to offer. UNReal Estate is back on board supporting the event as well as Jeramie Carter who is a designer jeweller and sculptor who provides the winners of each division a surprisingly different trophy that you will cherish and adore.
Contest Director, Natalie Jandl says, “ this is not your normal event , a few quirky changes, but i t works and we are proud t o provide you the second year i n a row the first ever, gay surfing competition, ever in the world.”
