Magda Szubanski has chosen to reveal on the prime-time television show The Project that she is gay.
After throwing her support behind the marriage equality cause, actor Magda Szubanski best known for her work on Kath and Kim, has revealed that she is gay. Earlier in the day, Szubanski released a statement supporting marriage equality, saying, “I am 1000 per cent in favour of gay marriage”.
Szubanski elaborated: “We pay taxes, fight wars for this country, nurse you when you are sick, make you laugh, sing and dance for you, play netball for you, star in your movies, cook your meals, decorate your store windows. And, chances are gay people designed whatever it is you’re wearing. All Australians, including gay Australians, should have the same rights, including the right to love, marry and care for our partners.”
“The law means that you could be a serial killer and have killed all of your spouses, yet you would still be considered fit to marry. But if you are gay, you are not worthy of these same rights…”
Szubanski’s plea for tolerance follows the introduction of two member’s Bills yesterday by Greens member Adam Brandt and Labor MP Stephen Jones, which hope to redefine the Marriage Act as the Union of two people regardless of sex.
Following today’s statement, Szubanski appeared on the Ten Network’s The Project, revealing to the audience and panel that she is gay.
Szubanski said her friends and family had known she was gay for decades. “All my colleagues knew, I’m sure all of you knew,” she told the panel on The Project. “It’s not like I was running around hiding it, but there’s a difference between living life openly and living life absolutely publicly. “How do you communicdate to someone what it feels like to be on the receiving end of prejudice?”
