LGBTQI book diorama event at New York Public Library.
Growing, many queer people first see or recognize themselves in books and literature. These are often the first ‘places’ we locate our identities, especially if we are growing up queer in geographically isolated areas.
To address the importance of books in the process of identity formation, Pop-Up founding director Hugh Ryan and award-winning queer author Sassafras Lowrey are co-curating an exhibit at the New York Public Library, Jefferson Market Branch.
Sponsored by the Pop-Up Museum of Queer History and Lambda Literary Foundation, the event is designed to break down the divide between the author and reader, to create conversation through art exploring the role of the queer book within our community.
LGBTQ artists from the U.S., Canada, and South Africa have created dioramas depicting books that contributed to their formation of understanding themselves as LGBTQ people.
Lesbian highlights of The Queer Diorama Show include: Beebo Brinker Chronicles (Ann Bannon) —- Melissa Sky & Jennifer Corbett, Chelsea Girls (Eileen Myles) —- Michelle Morgan, Female Masculinity (Jack Halberstam) —- Jenny Lin, Fun Home (Allison Bechdel) —- Jacky Flagg, Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit &Rubyfruit Jungle (Jeanette Winterson, Rita Mae Brown) —- Kate Conroy, Roving Pack (Sassafras Lowrey) —- Michelle Brennan and Rubyfruit Jungle (by, Rita Mae Brown) —- Victoria Baker
