Eve Ensler’s world-famous tribute to female identity and sexuality comes to Sydney’s North Shore
Call them what you like, vaginas mean many things to many women.
Acclaimed writer Eve Ensler has put together a collection of diverse, candid, funny, heart-wrenching and insightful stories of women, their experiences, lives – and yes, even their no-longer-so-private parts. This show proclaims proudly that there is not just one way to be a woman.
An Obie Award-winning whirlwind of a forbidden zone, The Vagina Monologues introduces a wonderfully divergent gathering of female voices including a six year old girl, a septuagenarian New Yorker, a ‘Vagina Workshop’ participant, a woman who witnesses the birth of her granddaughter, a Bosnian survivor of rape, a man who “likes to look at it”, and a woman who likes to make vaginas happy!
Each of the monologues deals with an aspect of the female experience: they are fascinating, funny and almost unbearably moving. The end result is a daring and refreshingly liberating experience filled with compassion, humour, intelligence and honesty that will leave you thinking inside the box!
“The Vagina Monologues is about women… It’s that simple.” says director Megan Spindler. “It’s about women and not about women versus men, or women versus society. It is simply a place for the female voice to speak up and be heard without restriction.
“My aim for this production is not to define or judge the experiences of women, but merely allow a space for the audience to listen, think and determine for themselves what these honest sometimes funny and sometimes horrid stories mean to them. My hope is that every audience member leaves with a slightly more open mind and heart that makes the way for one other human just that little bit easier.”
The cast features Lauren McNaught, Lilli Toll, Portia Prednay, Kelly McGowan, Sasha Murray, Nicole Smith, Kathryn Thomas, JoAnna Ferrari, Belinda Humphries and Rose Edwards.
