The Queen’s Birthday Ball has grown from very humble beginnings to be the longest running gay and lesbian event in the world.
Founded in 1961 by Brisbane drag identity Dame Sybil Von Thorndyke, this year the ball celebrates 50 years.
To celebrate the golden anniversary, the ball will be held at one of Brisbane’s most iconic venues, Cloudland in Fortitude Valley, on Sunday, June 12 from 6pm.
The ball will feature shows from some of Queensland’s premier drag performers including Dame Sybil Von Thorndyke, and will see the presentation of 12 awards voted by the general public for outstanding achievements in the GLBTI community.
Gold is the evening’s theme and party-goers are encouraged to dress to impress. There will be awards for best costumes, including ‘Belle of the Ball’ and ‘Themed Group in Costume’. The party will continue into the night with DJs after the award presentations.
You know you’ve been looking for an excuse to wear those gold hot pants you bought last year for Mardi Gras!
The awards for “Belle Of The Ball” and “Themed Group In Costume” will be judged on the night. Because of the great new venue, this year’s party will continue on with DJs after the awards, so expect to party the night away in style.
Tables for ten cost between $400 to $500 (depending on location and availability) and include two bottles of champagne and canapés. Tables are limited so get in quick!
Tickets bought online are $30 plus a booking fee or $30 at the door through selected venues.
Come and celebrate this massive milestone in Brisbane’s GLBTI history in style and meet old and new friends at the premier event of the 2011 Brisbane Pride Festival.
