Four queer Melbourne acts have been lined up for a hot Midsumma night.
Four queer Melbourne acts have been lined up for a hot Midsumma night of songs, banter and good times at the 2016 Midsumma Festival. From lush ‘70s hits by The Fondue Set, to Queen Beaver’s cheeky covers, to The Ukulele ladies’ toe-tapping tunes and Anna Tirotta’s country rock, this eclectic bill is the perfect way to celebrate the sultry season in downtown Northcote.
Six-piece The Fondue Set features members from Blue King Brown, Plastered Bastard Sisters and Buttered Loaf. Lead singer Kylie Brickhill is looking forward to unleashing her powerhouse vocals on new versions of Cheetah’s “dirty but amusing” Bang Bang, and Shocking Blue’s classic Venus among faves by Heart, Cher and Petula Clark. Brickhill, who "grew up fancying Susan Dey rather than David Cassidy,” promises she’ll also belt out some Partridge Family.
Dusty Footpaths and Rhododendron Sur la Tibetan Montagne, aka The Ukulele Ladies, have been described as “a bit Vegas, a touch Hawaii, and a tad Tamworth”. The plucky duo play the gamut of musical genres, from classical to disco, accompanied of course, by their ukuleles.
You’ll laugh, you’ll cry (with laughter) and you’ll sing along with queer trio Queen Beaver, who keep the great tunes coming with a comic twist. Guitar licks from Michelle (The Houndlings), Lucy's banging voice and Stayci's lively banter ensure you’ll be “livin’ the Beaver loca” by the time the night is through.
And if you’ve ever wondered what “Tina Turner meets Katie Perry at the rodeo with leg warmers on” looks (and sounds) like, meet Anna Tirotta. The singer-guitarist lends her pop stylings to the sound of country rock, playing originals and covers from the ’60s to modern day Top 40. Y’all are gonna love her.
This fab four line-up is unlikely to be repeated soon, so do yourself a favour and be there (or you’ll be les miserable – ha!).
