Fables Queer and Familiar explores the lives of two lesbian grannies, their friends, family and community.
Bernie Hobbs launches Fables Queer and Familiar – a wry, affectionate look at two lesbian grannies’ lives. Their passions and preoccupations range from gay marriage to gardening, from refugees to recycling, from dogs to dishonesty.
Along the way, they reveal what lesbians do in bed, and they deal with all the issues of daily life, from phones that are too smart, to the possibility of dying with dignity. Anyone who knows an aging lesbian feminist will recognise the combination of good intentions and aching joints. Anyone young will recognise the mystification of the youngest characters observing an adult world.
The Fables started out as an online serial by Mag Merrilees. It has also been broadcast as a radio serial. Chia Moan has taken the Fables and added her own quirky and irreverent illustrations. The result is now published in book form by Wakefield Press.
There will be nibbles, drinks and readings. Books, teatowels and cards are also available.
“I wish I could live in the hilarious, delightful, and very queer world of these Fables.” – Alison Bechdel
