Sydney Gay and Lesbian Choir will be running free community singing workshops so you can get your voice heard.
The Sydney Gay & Lesbian Choir is running a series of free singing workshops for over 55s. The series happening in the month of May has had generous support from the City of Sydney.
The opportunity is there to perform two songs on stage with the Choir at its Broadway Baby concert at Sydney Town Hall on Sunday 2 June.
The morning workshops start on Thursday 9 May at Abraham Mott Hall in Millers Point and will be lead by Sydney Gay & Lesbian Choir’s music director, Dr Sarah Penicka-Smith.
“The idea for these workshops came about through the positive experiences that Sydney Gay & Lesbian Choir members have recently had when performing at aged care facilities and community events and the Choir’s desire to regularly connect with all walks of life in Sydney”, Sarah said.
“As well as breaking down barriers, the Choir is particularly mindful of the fact that many older LGBTI individuals, particularly those in the aged and disabled care system, may have few opportunities to engage with their own community. A recent survey of choir members identified aging as one of the top five issues that the Choir wished to explore through future performances and collaborations.”
Sydney Gay & Lesbian Choir welcomes members regardless of their sexual identity or musical ability. Everybody is also welcome to these community singing workshops; straight and not so straight, young and not so young.
As part of the workshops you will learn tips on how to get the best out of your voice and be taught two music theatre songs which the Choir will be singing at its June concert at Sydney Town Hall. The Choir hopes that as many workshop participants as possible will want to be a part of the concert.
If the workshops arent for you there is still the fabulous Broadway Baby to check out on Sunday June 2. Everybody loves a musical, and for many people in the queer community, singing along to a good old Broadway show tune around the piano is a rite of passage.
Sydney Gay & Lesbian Choir wants to finally see its name in lights with its next major concert, Broadway Baby. Performing a sensational selection of music theatre hits from across the decades, the choir will be joined by special guests including Australian entertainment legend Simon Burke, The Sydney Detachment of the Royal Australian Navy Band and the Tip Top Tapping Lovelies.
