Year after year, the Brisbane Queer Film Festival never fails to deliver on its promise to bring you the best LGBTI films
Showcasing a selection of films so sensational your head might just explode in a shower of sequins, the ever-popular festival returns to Brisbane Powerhouse from Friday 8 to Sunday 17 April.
This ten-day celebration of bent cinema has become an absolute ‘must-do on the calendars of Brisbane’s queer and film communities and the diverse, sexy, funny and always unique program – not to mention the fabulous opening night party – never disappoints.
With films from France, Peru, Germany, the UK, the USA, Italy and more, the program is a real global affair, full of shocks, delights, tears, laughter, tragedies and triumphs and most of all a multitude of characters and stories you will fall in love with.
Watch an adventurous young woman lose herself in the hedonism of 1960’s Paris; a colourful and foul-mouthed feature musical; a story of love and life-after-death between a married Peruvian fisherman and his artist lover; see secret diaries revealed in an acclaimed British drama; the tangled web is woven between members of a musical family; witness the family dynamics of a ballroom dancing dynasty. And these stories are just the beginning.
The Program
The documentary program this year features Rock Hudson: Dark and Handsome Stranger, a real-life look at the public and private life of the secretly gay screen idol who was one of the first Hollywood celebrities to die of AIDS; Rufus Wainwright: Prima Donna explores the unique life of one of music’s most flamboyant and mercurial talents from the individual perspectives of the entire Wainwright clan; Sex in an Epidemic looks at the social and cultural history of HIV/AIDS in the US and its impact on the gay community.
The BQFF program also features the usual screening of both girls and boys short films from around the world. And of course, the festival kicks off as always with flashing lights, fabulous beats and hours and hours of sexy, sweaty dancing, so you’d better dust off your boogie shoes. It’s undoubtedly the party of the year, so don’t miss out!
