For the first time outside of the US, an exclusive addiction and trauma treatment facility has opened for the LGBTQI community.
Off the back of a monumental week for the LBGTQ community, and for the first time outside of the US, an exclusive addiction and trauma treatment facility have opened with programs specifically designed to cater to the unmet needs of the LGBTQ community.
Resort 12 has opened in Thailand and was developed by the same addiction services group as the world-class The Cabin Chiang Mai. The premium rehab will enable those who identify as LGBTQ to speak openly and freely with a multi-disciplinary team of highly trained clinicians with direct experience in dealing with the community, most of whom are LGBTQ themselves.
The disproportionately high numbers of LGBTQ people who struggle with addiction and trauma are directly related to experiences of stigma, prejudice, discrimination and abuse on the basis of their sexuality. In Australia, young LGBTQ individuals are five times more likely than the general population to attempt suicide in their lifetime, while trans people are nearly eleven times more likely.
Addiction takes multiple forms and no one person is exempt from it. Fundamentally, there are parts of addiction, trauma and mental health that are the same regardless of sexual orientation, however, there are certain nuances to the LGBTQ community that are not shared broadly and as such need a considered approach.
From substance addictions such as alcohol, heroin and ice, to process addictions including sex and sex parties, Resort 12 tailors treatment to each individual’s specific needs in an empathetic and secure location where addicts are able to speak uncensored about issues such as HIV, hepatitis C, bullying, coming out, Chemsex, body dysmorphia, bisexuality and societal homophobia.
Welcomed by the likes of Elton John, David Furnish and Boy George, the inception of Resort 12 is a significant development for the LGBTQ community and the fight against addiction.
The Cabin Chiang Mai has been a long-standing destination of choice for Australians battling addiction, including many LGBTQ people. However, Resort 12 will open to address the specific issues faced by LGBTQ addicts in a safe and supportive environment.
