Katy B’s ‘Little Red’ has moments of green envy.
The second studio album Little Red from British artist Katy B is a solid dance album offering. Her debut album On A Mission was indeed on a mission to conquer and in some respects, it did just that. That offering had a little something, almost like an inner soul that oozed out onto the dance floor with a little panache.
However, Little Red does not reach that height or the same feeling as the first, regardless of its superior budget and polish. Perhaps it’s the very budget and polish that lacked in the first that made that album what it was – raw and unabashed stories of a party girl from the dance floor to you.
It’s been three years since that first album and Katy B has released a couple of singles in that time including “5 Am”, a track that hints at the fun-loving party girl we know Katy to be.
“Crying For No Reason” is one of the stronger tracks on this album and clearly stands out as does “Aaliyah”, which presents a level of angst to our dance beat with ease.
“Emotions” highlights Katy’s vocals nicely with a slower pace and subtle instrumentals and beats through the verses, building to a powerful chorus, which manages to fill you with “emotion”.
However, the album just fell a little flat and didn’t present anything that makes the album exceptional or a stand-out. Katy B has talent, her voice is engaging and her charm comes through strong in each track, however, someone needs to let the girl back out to play and let her make the music that she does best – raw unadulterated dance beats fit for any party girl.
