For its next major concert, Sydney Gay & Lesbian Choir will be donning its gay apparel and giving the gift of music with a Santa’s stocking full of fabulous festive songs.
Family Christmas Album will showcase the greatest holiday hits from across cultures and decades while reflecting on what the season means to the community, and how a family Christmas can take many forms.
No other Christmas concert in Sydney this year will take you from Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus to Frosty the Snowman to Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You. Sydney Gay & Lesbian Choir will cut through the commercialism with Tim Minchin’s modern Australian classic White Wine in The Sun, and Garfunkel and Oates’ hilarious Present Face.
Even the patriarchal proclivity of our most traditional carols will be given an overhaul with Eric Lane Barnes’ Feminist Holiday Songbook.
Sydney Gay & Lesbian Choir’s Music Director, Dr Sarah Penicka-Smith, said, “Whatever you choose to celebrate at this time of year, there is no denying that the season has given the world some of the most beautiful music as well as some of the most annoying music. This concert will be a celebration of the best and the unexpected, with plenty of opportunities for the audience to join us in some good old-fashioned carol singing.”
Amongst the fun, the choir will also perform a selection of sublime choral masterpieces including Benjamin Britten’s Corpus Christi Carol, Morten Lauridsen’s O Magnum Mysterium and the celebratory Jewish song, Shehecheyanu.
“The festive season means many different things to us all,” said Sarah. “It can be an especially difficult time for many people in the LGBTQI community so we hope the sharing of music and stories in this concert will be a heartwarming and unifying evening for all.”
