The fight for marriage equality is a contemporary civil rights movement.
Almost two weeks after the United States declared same-sex marriage a fundamental right, Australian politicians on both sides are feeling the pressure. With a reported 74% of Australians in support of legalising same-sex marriage, Parliament will have a full schedule when they resume in August. On August 11, a cross-party bill on the issue will be introduced. It is reported that this bill will be discussed on August 18 in the Liberal party room.
With the mounting pressure, opponents say that legalising same-sex marriage would “change the very meaning of marriage.” The Australian Christian Lobby has stated that there is “a huge number of Australians who would never accept the new definition of family.”
With more supporters every day, the movement for same-sex marriage is growing stronger. The fight for marriage equality is a contemporary civil rights movement. People of all sexual orientations have joined in to help make Australia, and the world, a more unified and accepting place.
