In 2013 filmmaker Barbara Kapinski produced the documentary High Risk: The Flipside of Flamboyance, exploring depression in the LGBTQ community via candid interviews of lived experiences from people across the community. Her interview subjects include Indigenous writer Noel Tovey, journalist Peter Murphy, artist and scholar Zahra Stardust, academia and queer sex worker rights activist Elena Jeffreys, and former Big Brother contestant and creative entrepreneur Johnnie Cass.

“I decided to apply for a Lesbians Incorporated grant because lesbian, bisexuals and queers have a high level of depression according to [mental health organisation] beyondblue,” says Kapinski.

Her grant from Lesbians Incorporated allowed her to incorporate additional interviews into the film. Part of the footage also contributed to a program for trainers at health promotion organisation ACON working with those in the helping professions.

Kapinski is currently working on a similar Flipside of Flamboyance film about the 78ers, participants of significant LGBTQ rights events in Sydney in 1978 including the first Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade.
