Penny Sharpe discusses what same-sex parents experience in Australian media.
The Australian Christian Lobby has launched a campaign against the Safe Schools national anti-bullying program. The program is intended to help school staff and students support and accept same-sex attracted, intersex, and gender diverse individuals.
NSW Labor MP Penny Sharpe said she has received close to 1000 emails from ACL supporters calling for the “radical” program to be discontinued. About the campaign and the emails, Sharpe stated “This campaign is based on misinformation about a program designed to support and keep LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or intersex) kids safe at school. The ACL hides flimsily behind a veil of concern for children yet the emails sent to MPs are often homophobic and transphobic.”
Again, the group is using the argument that “homosexuality is not natural.” This demonisation of LGBT individuals and parents through the media impacts families negatively.
Recently, Penny Sharpe gave a talk at Ignite Sydney about this demonisation process. The five minute talk is entitled Gay Families, Politics and The Whole Damn Thing. In the video, Sharpe discusses her personal experiences in trying to protect her family from the negative words coming from the media, as well as how diverse families are and what is truly important for a family, love and care.
