“Every Australian has the right to live, love and learn in freedom, and to grow old in safety, with dignity and respect.”

A petition requesting that Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull stand up for the LGBTI community has been started by the Australian Equality Party.  

The petition was started following the Orlando massacre in the United States. It begins by stating that the group has “grave concerns for the safety and well-being of the Australian LGBTI community.”

It is requested that the Prime Minister agrees to an organised meeting with LGBTI community leaders so they can discuss the concerns felt while also developing “strategies to counter rising anti-LGBTI sentiment.”

The group also highlights that anti-LGBTI rhetoric is rising in Australia, causing a negative impact on the LGBTI community and heightening fears that the rhetoric will spill over into acts of violence.

The petition also speaks on the fact that, “Every Australian has the right to live, love and learn in freedom, and to grow old in safety, with dignity and respect.”
