The path recognises the city’s LGBTI history.
The Rainbow Walk in Light Square will celebrate the city’s gay and lesbian community and recognise SA as the first state to decriminalise homosexuality in 1975.
Lord Mayor Martin Haese says the City of Adelaide is proud to be a diverse, inclusive city and is determined to honour its commitment to recognise this through the Rainbow Walk.
Former Greens Senator and Adelaide City Councillor Robert Simms told ABC the installation sends a positive message.
“We have a very proud story to tell here in South Australia – we were the first state in the country to decriminalise homosexuality,” Mr Simms said.
“The reason why I put this project forward when I was on council was so that we could recognise that tradition and really celebrate that proud history.”
The launch of the monument comes as part of Adelaide’s annual Feast Festival, celebrating LGBTIQ+ culture.
