This new campaign aims to have marriage equality achieved through parliament.
In a new joint campaign for marriage equality, Australians for Equality (A4E) and Australian Marriage Equality (AME) have launched The Equality Campaign.
This new campaign aims to have marriage equality achieved through a parliament vote so that every Australian is treated equally under the law.
Co-chair of Australians for Equality, Anna Brown said, “The Equality Campaign is about building on the momentum and energy generated across the nation for marriage equality and continuing to campaign for a straightforward change to be achieved by a vote in the parliament.”
The Equality Campaign focuses on humanising the issues in the centre of the discussion. The campaign is also shifting from the negative atmosphere that surrounded the plebiscite. By focusing on love, respect, and happiness, the campaign will remind people of the importance and the beauty of marriage equality.
“It is a campaign based on promoting conversations about why equality matters to us rather than angry politicised debates.”
By setting a positive and confident tone, The Equality Campaign aims to empower LGBTI people to discuss marriage equality with friends, family, work colleagues and neighbours. The campaign wants to remind every LGBTI person that they are the single most influential people in the space they live in.
“The campaign will show the strength and diversity of support for marriage equality,” Brown said.
Supporters can find tools to lobby MPs, hold local events, and share the many reasons why marriage equality matters with their communities at the campaign’s official website.
Another aspect the campaign is focusing on involves showing how marriage equality is simply based on the shared Australian values of a fair go and respect for all. Brown stated, “It’s important that these values continue to underpin the ongoing national conversation on marriage equality.”
Currently, two-thirds of Australians support marriage equality as well as a majority of politicians. Ms. Brown continued to say, “Marriage equality will not change anything for the vast majority of Australians, but will make a profound difference to the status and dignity of many.”
Alex Greenwich, Co-Chair of Australian Marriage Equality said, “this campaign will continue our work across the nation, bringing supporters together, holding community events and forums to change the hearts and minds of communities across Australia.”
The campaign will continue to call on supporters that span all political parties to continue working on finding a path for a free vote in parliament.
“Marriage is about the commitment shared between two people who love each other and want a secure future together. LGBTI Australian’s should have the same opportunities for love, commitment and happiness as everyone else,” concluded Mr. Greenwich.
