A Melbourne couple recorded the driver’s rant after he discovered the women are lesbians.
Over the weekend, Lucy Thomas and her girlfriend were verbally abused and threatened by an Uber driver. The couple confronted the driver after he said that he disliked football because, “It was a bunch of faggots jumping around and touching each other,” Thomas recounted to the Star Observer.
When she informed the driver that using the term was offensive to many people, he asked if they were gay, to which Thomas said their sexuality didn’t matter. Thomas recalled that the rest of the two kilometre trip was riddled with homophobic and racist comments on the driver’s part.
Once arriving at their house, the couple said the driver continued his rant, at which point Thomas pulled out her phone and began recording.
In the audio clip, posted to Twitter, the driver can be heard saying, “What are you going to do, give me a low rating and make a complaint? When I write my report about two faggots who don’t like being called faggots. What’re they going to say?”
He continues, “Get out of the car… If you don’t, I’ll get out and drag you out.”
Thomas told the Star Observer that the driver stayed outside the couple’s house as they walked in.
On Monday, Thomas confirmed on her Twitter account that Uber had fired the driver after she put in a formal complaint and reported it to the police. An Uber spokesperson said, “As soon as we were made aware of this incident, we removed the driver from the platform.”
Thomas said that she and her girlfriend decided to share the incident to remind the community that these issues remain a problem.
